Our daycare centres give you time to study

looking after one or more children "alongside" your studies is a major challenge: organisationally, financially and in terms of time. Studierendenwerk Oldenburg supports you in this task.

We run a total of four daycare centres in Oldenburg, Emden and Wilhelmshaven. All daycare centres are easy to reach from the universities or are even close to the campus. In principle, all parents who live in the respective city can enrol their child in our daycare centres. When allocating places, children of students are given priority, and we also give special consideration to children of university employees.

How do I get a place?

In Oldenburg, Emden and Wilhelmshaven there is a centralised procedure for allocating daycare places. The places in our daycare centres are also allocated via this system. When registering, it is important to state that you are a student or employee at the University of Oldenburg, Jade University of Applied Sciences or Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences.

Via the central portal of the respective city, you can specify up to three daycare centres in which you would like to register your child (first, second and third choice). The standard registration period runs from 1 to 31 January in Oldenburg and from 1 to 31 March in Emden each year. There is always an open day in good time beforehand, where parents and children can get to know the daycare centre and ask questions.

In Wilhelmshaven , you have a longer period of time to enter your favourite daycare centres in the portal: It is open from 1 October to 31 January, with places being allocated in February. You can find all further information about the process directly on your city's portal.

The vast majority of places are allocated from the start of the daycare year, i.e. from 1 August. If you need a childcare place at a different time, it is best to ask the daycare centre directly whether this is possible.

How much does a daycare place cost?

In Lower Saxony, childcare is free of charge from the 3rd birthday until the child starts school. Before that, the monthly fee depends on the parents' income. The exact amount is set by each local authority for all daycare centres in the municipal area. Discounts are available for siblings. The best place to find out about the current contribution levels is on the website of the respective city, but our daycare centre managers can of course also provide you with information.

Irrespective of this, our daycare centres charge catering fees for breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks. You can find out the current amount directly from the daycare centre.

Küpkersweg day care centre

In addition, the Studierendenwerk ensures the operation of the Küpkersweg daycare centre in Oldenburg-Wechloy by leasing the land and building to the "Studentenselbsthilfe-Kindertagesstätte e.V.".

Financial support for student parents

In principle, there are numerous support options for student parents. Depending on the individual situation, various state benefits can be considered. However, as the legal regulations are - to put it kindly - not easy to understand, it always makes sense to seek advice from the Studierendenwerk.

Social counsellor Heiko Groen knows all the options and can check with you which ones are suitable for you. This is because calculating which combination of state benefits is most favourable in each individual case is highly complicated. Individual counselling is therefore essential - not least to find out whether the sometimes high level of bureaucracy involved in applying for individual benefits is worthwhile.

Living with children

If required, the Studierendenwerk Oldenburg might be able provide accommodation for students with children in some of our halls of residence. However, certain waiting times must be expected here. It is also important to know that both parents - if both want to move in with the child - must be enrolled students at one of the universities we support. It is best to contact the student housing department directly if you are interested in this type of accommodation.

Further options and information

The Catholic University Community(KHG) in Oldenburg offers flats for single students with child(ren) in the Oscar-Romero-Haus .

Students with children can also look for suitable accommodation at the Oldenburg housing co-operative GSG.

Housing entitlement certificate
Like many other low-income groups, students with children and pregnant women are also entitled to a certificate of eligibility for housing with an urgency level in order to be entitled to social housing. However, as affordable housing is in short supply, a certificate of eligibility does not guarantee a (dream) flat.

Information on costs and conditions as well as how to apply can be found on the website of the City of Oldenburg
