Studierendenwerk - What's that?
Making your everyday life as a student easier and more enjoyable - that's our job. We have a legal mandate to support students at the University of Oldenburg, Jade University of Applied Sciences and Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences in terms of health, social, cultural and economic matters.
That's what we do:
- We run canteens and cafeterias.
- We rent out accommodation.
- We are responsible for BAföG.
- We support and advise students with questions about financing their studies and studying with a disability or chronic illness and offer psychological counselling.
- We run daycare centres.
- We provide a stage for creative artists and organise events ourselves.
So there's a good chance that you've already used one of our services - perhaps even without realising it.
Like all 57 German student services organisations, Studierendenwerk Oldenburg is an independent public institution. This means that we are not part of the universities whose students we support.
Our financing
The Studierendenwerk's tasks are financed from several sources. We generate the majority of our income ourselves, mainly in the canteens and cafeterias and by renting out the halls of residence.
However, this alone is not enough to finance the low prices in the canteens, the low rents, the promotion of culture and our free counselling services.
The shortfall comes from two sources: Firstly, there is the financial aid from the state of Lower Saxony, which supports the Studierendenwerk. Then there is the student union fee. This varies from location to location (depending on the range of programmes offered) and is paid as part of the semester fee when you enrol or re-enrol at the university. It is a solidarity contribution that all students are obliged to pay.
Student union fee (since the winter semester 2023/2024)
Oldenburg | 98 € |
Elsfleth | 91 € |
Emden | 98 € |
Wilhelmshaven | 98 € |
BAföG is not paid out by the Studierendenwerk itself, but is financed exclusively by the state. We are only responsible for administration, the state is responsible for payment. The administrative costs are reimbursed directly to the Studierendenwerk.
In total, the volume of the profit and loss account (quasi annual turnover) of the Studierendenwerk Oldenburg amounted to more than € 28.2 million in 2023, with a balance sheet total of € 63.7 million. We publish more detailed information on financing in our annual report each year.
