How much BAföG can I expect to receive?

The maximum monthly funding amount is €992. This amount can be realised if the student has their own flat and has to pay their own health and nursing care insurance. As a rule, the BAföG rate paid out depends on the parents' income.

The following table provides an overview of the different rates:

living with parentsown flat
Basic requirement475475
Need for accommodation59380
Allowance for health insurance102102
Subsidy for long-term care insurance3535

The health and long-term care insurance supplement is only granted to those students with statutory health insurance who are compulsorily insured as students. Students who have free statutory family insurance or who are already subject to compulsory insurance as orphan pensioners or employed persons do not receive the supplement. Students who are no longer eligible for student health insurance and therefore have higher costs can receive a monthly allowance of up to €185, plus an additional €48 for long-term care insurance.

What does the subsidy amount depend on?

How much BAföG you receive in individual cases usually depends on your parents' income. On average, around a quarter of all BAföG recipients in Germany receive the maximum rate. The average monthly grant amount paid out nationwide in 2023 was €663. (Source: Federal Statistical Office)

If you would like to know in advance whether the application is worthwhile, it is best to come to the BAföG consultation with your parents' tax assessment from the year before last. We can then do a trial calculation.

In exceptional cases, BAföG is also granted independently of parents , e.g. if you have already been working for a certain period of time before starting your studies. In this case, you can always count on the maximum rate!

Good to know:

Even a BAföG entitlement that seems low at first glance, perhaps "only" 50 euros, can pay off: Did you know, for example, that as a BAföG recipient you are exempt from paying the licence fee?
Certain other benefits are also linked to your status as a BAföG recipient. So: submit your application!
