Disability counselling

Your contact person

Moin moin, my name is Wiebke Hendeß,

i have been counselling disabled and chronically ill students at the Studierendenwerk Oldenburg since 1999 and was previously active in the self-help organisation for disabled students for many years. I am a wheelchair user myself, completed my studies at the University of Oldenburg and have various additional qualifications in counselling disabled people. I can therefore advise those affected on an equal footing.

Counselling concept

My counselling is based on the principles of peer counselling (those affected advise those affected). When dealing with one's own disability is discussed, the limits, but also the potentials, can be considered together. I also support student self-help organisations and campaign for the interests of disabled and chronically ill people nationwide. To this end, I work in various committees at Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences, Jade University of Applied Sciences and the university and am networked with many other advice and information centres.

Who can seek advice?

Disability counselling is part of the overall counselling services offered by Studierendenwerk Oldenburg and is responsible for students at Carl von Ossietzky University, Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences and Jade University of Applied Sciences. Other contact persons are responsible for counselling outside the North-West region.

The counselling service is open to all students, prospective students and graduates who consider themselves to be disabled or chronically ill, whether for physical or mental reasons. Dyslexia, depression, diabetes or MS, for example, can have a similar impact on studying as a mobility or sensory disability. Relatives, lecturers or other persons can also contact the disability counsellor. Wiebke Hendeß also offers the possibility of a work placement for students, e.g. from the social or special education sector.

The offer is also aimed at foreign students with disabilities who are studying at the Studierendenwerk Oldenburg.

Counselling topics

Disadvantage compensation

One focus of the counselling service is financial compensation for disadvantages. In addition, there is further compensation for disadvantages in the degree programme, in the library, when studying abroad and for foreign students, as well as teacher training and traineeships.

Study abroad

In the run-up to studying abroad, disabled students usually have to overcome many obstacles and hurdles - often enough of a bureaucratic nature. We help, advise and provide experience reports.

Career counselling

The counselling service also provides information on the transition to work with a disability or chronic illness.

Our counselling ranges from legal issues and practical everyday questions to very personal issues such as the question: "Am I even disabled or chronically ill?"

Note: Counselling on BAföG is covered by the financial aid department.
