Accessibility

Our aim is for all our facilities to be easily accessible for everyone. Unfortunately, in some cases this is not within our control or is not (yet) possible for other reasons. However, so that you can plan ahead, we would like to inform you here about the accessibility of our facilities.

Canteens and cafeterias

  • Mensa and Cafeteria Uhlhornsweg: The Mensa building itself is not equipped with automatic doors from the forecourt. There is a rear entrance with an automatic door (by the bicycle workshop), from where you can reach the lift directly. Inside the building, the dining hall is accessible by lift and automatic door.
  • CaféBars on the Haarentor campus: the CaféBars in the SSC and A1 are at ground level and can be reached via automatic doors. The CaféBar BIS in the library is accessible via a lift and an automatic door.
  • Mensa and Cafeteria Wechloy: The building is equipped with automatic doors, the dining room of the Mensa and the cafeteria are accessible via a lift. However, the lift is probably too narrow for very large wheelchairs.
  • Mensa and CaféLounge Emden: The doors to the building cannot currently be opened automatically. Inside the building, the CaféLounge at ground level and the canteen on the 1st floor (lift) are easily accessible.
  • Mensa Ofener Straße: barrier-free access (at ground level) with automatic door
  • Wilhelmshaven canteen: barrier-free access (at ground level) with automatic door
  • Cafeteria Wilhelmshaven: The main building of Jade University, where the cafeteria is located, is accessible via a ramp and an automatic door.
  • Mensa Elsfleth: barrier-free access (at ground level) with automatic door

There is a rear entrance with an automatic door that leads directly to the lift. Inside the building, however, the department is accessible via a lift and an automatic door.
  • Emden service office: The building is not equipped with automatic doors. The service office on the 1st floor is accessible via a lift.
  • Wilhelmshaven service office: barrier-free access via automatic doors and a lift.

Culture

Accompanying persons of severely disabled visitors (with the B mark) receive free admission to cultural events organised by the Studierendenwerk. The venues are steplessly accessible and there is enough space for wheelchair users. However, our own toilets are not wheelchair-accessible, so suitable toilets on the university campus must be used.

Daycare centres

For safety reasons, there are no automatic doors in any of our daycare centres.

  • Huntemannstraße daycare centre: The building and the group rooms are accessible without steps. The exercise room can only be reached via steps.
  • Kita Uni-Campus: The building has no steps and there is a disabled toilet.
  • Constantia daycare centre: The facility consists of two buildings. Both are steplessly accessible. Within the buildings, the group rooms are accessible at ground level. In the new building (crèche groups) there is also step-free access to the outdoor area, from the new building there is a step to negotiate. There is a disabled toilet in both buildings.

Central administration/office

The central administration on the 3rd floor of the canteen building on Uhlhornsweg can be reached by lift and automatic door. However, the canteen building itself is not equipped with automatic doors from the forecourt. There is a rear entrance with an automatic door that leads directly to the lift.

Eating on campus

For students, visiting canteens and cafeterias is an inexpensive and sociable alternative to their own cooking skills. With the following service offer, the Studierendenwerk would like to enable disabled and chronically ill students to participate (independently) in canteen meals.

In general, if you have special needs, the Disability Counselling Service is there to find a solution together with the respective departments in all areas of the Studierendenwerk so that you can use our services as fully as possible.

Here you can get help with serving and carrying the tray to your seat. After the meal, the tray can be cleared away, please let the cashier know briefly. In the Uhlhornsweg canteen, there are three specially marked tables with wheelchair access in two areas of the canteen in the immediate vicinity of the serving area. People with walking difficulties can find a free, easily accessible seat at these tables, even at "peak times". Empty trays are cleared from these tables even without a special request.

If you need a special table in the cafeterias or another canteen, the disability counsellor can arrange this for you.

The current meal plans can be found on the Studierendenwerk website. From there, they can be converted into the required form on the PC. The staff will continue to provide information about the dishes at the serving counter, guide you to the table and help you transport the tray. As with mobility-impaired guests, the tray can be cleared away by the staff. The so-called "wheelchair table" in the Uhlhornsweg canteen is also available to people with sensory impairments and has established itself as a kind of regular table among students.

Additives and supplements are declared on the menu in accordance with the statutory labelling requirements. Sugar-free dishes and desserts are specially labelled. Alcohol is not added at all. The majority of dishes are offered in components so that you can put together your menu according to your needs.

In the case of food intolerances, for example, ingredients such as sauces and side dishes can be exchanged or sandwiches can be made to order in the cafeterias. Our staff will be happy to answer any further questions regarding food preparation.

Needs-based living

The Studierendenwerk Oldenburg offers specially equipped flats for disabled and chronically ill students. Preferential consideration is regularly given not only to wheelchair-bound and mobility-impaired students, but also to sensory-impaired and chronically ill students. As proof of disability, students can submit a specialist medical certificate as an alternative to a severely disabled person's pass. In addition to this, a statement from the disability counselling service can be recognised as proof.

The Studierendenwerk Oldenburg endeavours to support students with special needs by providing suitable accommodation. As far as possible, we can also make certain adjustments to meet your personal needs (e.g. with regard to the furnishing of a room or flat).
We are not only thinking of students with physical disabilities: We also want to consider chronic illnesses or other restrictions. For example, if you are dependent on living in a single flat due to a mental illness or a severe food allergy, we can take this into account. If you are unsure whether and to what extent we can support you, please do not hesitate to contact our disability counsellor or the staff in our student housing department.

When applying, you should enter your needs in the comments field and also contact the department directly. This applies in particular to non-visible impairments.

In the Johann-Justus-Weg residential complex, there is a combined residential group for physically disabled students who require specially equipped rooms and for two non-disabled students each. A wheelchair-friendly kitchen is shared, in which the cooker, sink and work surfaces are wheelchair-accessible. In addition to a normally equipped bathroom, there is also a wheelchair-friendly shower room and WC. This provides the space required for all-day individual care if required.

There are two 4-bed flats in the Artillerieweg residential complex, each with a wheelchair-friendly bathroom and a wheelchair-friendly room. However, the cooker, sink and worktop in the kitchen are not wheelchair accessible.

There are three wheelchair-friendly single flats in the campus flats . The flats with barrier-free bathrooms and wheelchair-accessible kitchens are 32m² in size.

The Alte Färberei residential complex offers four individual flats that are completely wheelchair accessible. Many other structural features, such as the size of the shared laundry room in the complex and the arrangement of the appliances there, enable wheelchair-using tenants to be as independent as possible.

The Wiesenhof residential complex in Wilhelmshaven has a wheelchair-accessible flat on the ground floor, which consists of an approx. 24m2 living room, a small kitchen and an accessible bathroom.

The Studierendenwerk Oldenburg endeavours to take into account the special needs of disabled students. For example, it is possible to have your own parking space marked if you have a walking disability or to have a light bell or tactile labelling installed if you have a sensory impairment. It is also sometimes possible to accommodate a guide dog or an assistant in the flat. However, the assistant must also be a student in the Studierendenwerk's area of responsibility.

As a member of the working group for accessible housing, the Studierendenwerk's disability counsellor has a good overview of other flats for people with disabilities in Oldenburg. This working group has compiled a guide to barrier-free housing in Oldenburg and the surrounding area.

The disability counsellor herself helped to set up the inclusive housing project in which she lives and is well connected in the field of communal living.
